DISappointment

I finally got a letter from MIT today, but unfortunately it was to inform me that I was not admitted to the Visual Arts Program.

It's a bit crushing and overwhelming and I'm not sure what to do now. I was pretty postive that I was going to get in, so this is a little too much for me right now.

DIScourse

Today it started to snow a little in Portland and then it quickly changed to hail and then very heavy hail.  It's dry outside now, so I'm thinking I should head home.  I need to replace the umbrella I lost.

Tonight I am celebrating my birthday with friends at the Fez.  Nothing like dancing to music from the 80's to make you feel like you're 35!

I'm still waiting to hear from MIT.  I am now under the belief that I will not hear from them until Monday or possibly Tuesday, either through phone or email.  I really need to know if I've been accepted into the program.  The waiting is KILLING me. I feel I'm at a total standstill until I hear from them.

DIScourse

It's Thursday and I'm back at the Ace Hotel catching up on my Daily DIScriptions. Today it's rather grey and rainy outside. I was supposed to have lunch with an ex-coworker today but she was behind in her work and had to postpone our lunch.

I spent the last couple days at my parents making pins and watching t.v. I have now watched the first two seasons of Dexter as well as way too many episodes of Family Guy. I also saw some South Park and Simpsons episodes and the final episode of Gone Country (I can't believe Julio Iglesias Jr. won. What a sham!), which proves that I have a disease called television addiction, "Hello, my name is Dustin and I am an addict." Thankfully, I do not own a television and have no plans on ever getting one.

Yesterday I found out that the job in Antwerp is not going to happen, which is pretty disappointing. However, now it frees me to focus all my positive energy and thoughts on getting into MIT's Visual Arts Program. I really need to get back into school so I can redirect my career path and I need to have the academic stimulation that graduate school will bring.

I started reading The Rest is Noise by Alex Ross which is the book my friend lent me about the music of the 20th century, or rather the history of the 20th century as heard through music. I'm just a couple chapters into it so far and it's fairly interesting. I already want to see Salome.

Today, I mailed off the pins (badges) I made for the Imaad Wasif with Two Part Beast tour. Everyone should go see this band if you get a chance. The tour this time is just a West Coast thing (March 27 through April 07) but I think they'll be doing a national tour later in the year. I think the pins turned out well so I'm hoping they can make some money off them, since I can't afford to release the 7" single that I wanted to.

I'm not sure what I'm doing tonight. I may go out to dinner with a friend. I am also thinking of possibly going to see a film. I also need to practice my bass scales some more and of course read some more of the book. So, that's all for now.

DIScourse

It's Saturday and the rain of yesterday is now a memory. It's sunny and cool outside which is some of my favorite weather.

For those of you that have been following this blog I'm going to start posting the Daily DIScription separately from the journal entries. That way you can either just look at the Daily DIScriptions or avoid them altogether and just read the journal entries.

Today, I'm going to work on the concert poster for the Imaad Wasif show that happens on April 4. I'll post the finished image(s) here when I'm finished. Other than that there are no big plans for the day. I will probably practice bass scales since I haven't totally memorized the one I've been working on. I also have to try and find more scales to learn.

I may also start reading the book my friend lent me on music from the 20th century. Or, I will get back to reading one of the books I have on interactive art.

It's Friday again! Time keeps on slippin'...

Not much going on today and I don't have plans for this evening.

Yesterday, my mother came over in the afternoon and we went shopping together which was nice. She ended up buying me an early birthday present, the accessory holster I'm wearing today, which was something I saw with a friend last month. It will be good to take on trips since a passport, money or an iPod fits inside it and then you don't have to worry about having pockets. While we were walking around my mom found a cell phone on the ground so I ended up finding the person's mother's phone number and calling her and leaving the phone at Powell's for her to pick up. My mom and I also ran into my bartender from Fez. I guess he's also a hair stylist or barber which I didn't know.

After shopping for awhile we went to Justa Pasta (bad name, good food) for dinner which was nice, since I hadn't had dinner with my mom in quite some time and she doesn't go out to eat at real restaurants very often. She also reminded me that she is going to be 60 on her next birthday! Time keeps on slippin'...

After my mother dropped me off I met up with a friend to check out some of the galleries during First Thursday. There was a great player piano piece hook up to speakers that was playing a piece of music that had been altered to form a minimalist composition. One gallery had a whole show on Jesus with several new photographs from David Levinthal which was nice to see even though they aren't as strong of images as some of his other work which I really like. There was also an interesting show by an artist who did huge collages using portions of completed puzzles. He also did some interesting things layering images (movie posters) that had been randomly perforated. I also saw several pieces (mostly paintings) that compositionally and color-wise who look perfect in a SANAA interior.

When I got home I watched the last film, The Face of Another, in a Hiroshi Teshigahara box set that my friend lent me. The other two films were Pitfall and Woman in the Dunes. All three of the films are excellent and worth hunting down. The stories were all written by Kobo Abe and the soundtracks were done by Toru Takemitsu. I'm not sure which film was my favorite, but I'm leaning towards Woman in the Dunes. Teshigahara, or maybe Abe, seems to have a fascination with isolation which is explored in various ways in all these films.

Today got off on a bad foot. I woke up at 7:00 in order to prepare for my call to Belgium only to be told (once I called) that the owner was out of the office until Monday. So, it will be a few more days of waiting before I find out any more information about the possible design position.

After the call I stayed in bed for awhile and then got up and played around on my computer for a bit, mostly organizing iTunes and other files.

Last night I finished reading Your Brain on Music and then I spent an hour or so practicing bass scales. I think I might have finally memorized the A major scale. After reading the book, I realize how much better off I would have been if I had stuck with the guitar when I was in grade school. Unfortunately, the guitars I had were too large for me and I think even the shape (not to mention size) of my fingers aren't good for guitar. I now play a short scale bass which is much more comfortable, but my brain is a little too hard wired now to learn scales and chords very quickly.

A little before noon I got a call from an ex-coworker who invited me to lunch, so I got some cash at the ATM and met him outside my old office. After lunch (Thai) I walked over to Ace Hotel, which is where I am now as I type this.

I booked my flight to New York in April, so I will be able to meet the owners of Theo in person at the Vision Expo. Luckily, I was able to trade in some miles, so the flight only cost $5! Beofre I head to NYC I will be making arrangements for job interviews in Boston (if I'm accepted to MIT) or New York (if I am not). Anyway, it should make for an interesting trip. Who doesn't like New York in the Spring?

Well, I'm back at the hotel, importing the remaining portion of my Rune Grammofon collection into my iTunes as well as some other minimal electronic cds that I've been wanting to hear on my iPod. I was surprised to find how many Rune albums I didn't have in iTunes.

Tomorrow is the day I call Theo to speak to Big Boss about the design position. I'm excited and a little nervous. Today I'm going to look up some information regarding expatriating to Belgium. The question one always gets while growing up is "What do you want to be when you're older?". I was thinking and a good answer for me (at least since I was 15) would have been to answer, "an expatriate". Anyway, now the time may have come!

I'm also waiting for some information that I need for the concert poster I'm doing for Imaad Wasif's Portland show. I found a pretty good image from an old Indian book (or at least that's what the website said) that I'm using as the basis for the poster. We'll see how it turns out.

It's Monday (again) and I'm at the Ace Hotel (again). Not too much going on today other than looking into grad school loans, copying songs into my iTunes and listening to music.

I did just download the newest update to Traktor so I'm eager to get home and see what's new. I haven't even opened the Traktor software since Apotheke closed in the fall. Who knows maybe I'll be inspired to start dj-ing again.

With that, I should probably close this down and get back to my apartment.

Daily DIScription

It's the first day of March and threatening to rain but the sun is out. It also is Saturday so I felt entitled to sleep in a little. Although considering that I didn't get home until after 2 last night, I didn't really sleep in much.

Last night I met friends for drinks at a bar close to one of my old jobs. After getting drinks some of us decided to go dancing at 80's night. However, by the time we were in the car my friends were too tired to go dancing so they just dropped me off. It was pretty uneventful but very crowded at the club since they had hosted a fashion show there earlier in the night.

Today I'm just at the Ace Hotel (since the cafe near my apartment was full) checking email, doing a little work and updating my iTunes. Nothing too exciting planned for the evening. I may watch a film and put away those clothes that didn't get put away yesterday.

The waiting continues as far as MIT is concerned and I won't be talking to the owner of Theo until Tuesday or Wednesday.
