Daily DIScription (Leap Year Edition)

It's the end of week number three of unemployment and now it's really starting to kick in. I'm bored and I'm sleeping too much. I have to figure out someway to motivate myself more. I have tons of things I could be doing, but somehow I always end up not doing anything really productive. I have been reading some, which is good, but I need to clean my apartment and teach myself how to use Ableton Live as well as how to use my Lemur.

Maybe today is a good day to make a new new years resolution towards being more proactive.

It's 12:43 and my plans today are going to be applying for jobs, mailing a couple ebay items, and reading. I also need to put away some clothes and then I should start going over the Lemur tutorials. It's Friday so I might be going out with friends tonight, but nothing is concrete as of now.

Wish me luck.

Daily DIScription

Welcome back! I haven't had time to post in a few days so here are the all the delayed images. I don't know if anyone is still looking but if you are comments are appreciated. The more comments I get, the more time I'll put into this and the more diverse this blog will become.

It's a leap year, which means that tomorrow will be the "bonus" photo day. I also realized that I've been posting these images for over a month now. I hope I can manage to continue this for a whole year but there are going to be a lot of changes happening in my life over the next couple of months and they may preclude my ability to keep this up for a year.

I am in talks with a company in Antwerp about a possible design job there, which I really hope comes through, but there are still a lot of things I don't know about the job or about how I would get over there, find an apartment, get a visa, etc. I am also still waiting to hear back from MIT regarding my application to the Visual Arts Program. It's a very competitive program (a maximum of 6 will be excepted) but I have a pretty good feeling about it, I'm still really nervous about it though.

If neither of those two options materialize I am planning on applying for jobs in New York and hopefully moving there by June. I don't know how long I can make it on my unemployment so I really am hoping everything will come together quickly as I need some stability in my life right now and I need to enjoy what I'm doing.

I'm still applying for local design jobs, but there aren't really any companies in town that I want to work for. Most of the interior jobs are in architectural firms and I really need to get out of that type of environment as they lack creativity.

On my walk down to the Ace Hotel today I was hit by an elderly woman in her car. She was pulling out of a parking lot onto Burnside (a major street) and she apparently was only looking to her left. As I approached the car it stopped at the sidewalk (so I thought she saw me) and then I continued walking only to be hit by her car when I was directly in front of her on the drivers side. Luckily she was going slow and stopped as soon as she saw me halfway on her hood pounding. I was also really close to the bumper so as soon as she moved I felt it, which turned out to be a good thing since I can see how even at a really slow speed getting hit by a car can really screw up your body., knocking everything out of alignment.

Finally, today I was sent a link to the New York Times review of newly opened Y-3 store in New York. The article has a couple photos of the space and I was surprised and somewhat happy to see that my design from the Y-3 flagship store in Tokyo made it into the New York store. The shelving, fixtures (some of the fixtures were Kunzweiler designs that I was asked to incorporate into the Tokyo store) and mirrored wall are all directly taken from the prototype design (which is almost two years old now). Anyway, the fact that my design is still being used is a pretty nice compliment. Personally, I would have done else for New York, but the review was favorable and now I can say that my prototype design was used in New York. I just wish I could have worked on the New York store. It would have been much nicer than working on condos and vet clinics like I have for the past 18 months.

Okay, that's all for now. Come back later for more news and updates on my future plans.

Daily DIScription

End of week two of unemployment. On Wednesday I drove to Seattle to see some friends, sell some records, eat some food and drink some Belgian ale.

Thursday I had coffee and a donut with my friend before he had to go to work. Then I was forced with having to decide on what to do for 6 hours while he was at work. Every time I visit Seattle I am more and more astounded at the appalling state of things. Luckily my friend remembered that Thursday was free admission day to the Henry Art Museum. I drove to H.A.M. and was surprised to walk into an exhibition of work by SANAA, a Japanese architectural office, that I only had heard of after looking into who designed the Dior store in Omotesando, which I think is one of the most beautiful buildings I've seen. SANAA plays a lot with light, space and breaking up space. They had several models, photographs, prototypes, drawings at the show which gave a really good sense to their style. It also made me wish I had a house made of thin steel walls and acrylic. While at the Henry I finally made it to James Turrell's "SkySpace" permanent installation which was closed the last time I was there. It was a clear day so the "skylight" was open and as soon as I walked into the space a bird flew over head which was great. The opening in the ceiling has no visible edge so the sky appears to be a flat projected image. Really great. I should would have liked to have sat there with headphones on but the meter on the car was running.

After the museum I drove around and ended up back on Capital Hill, where my shoe guys put heal taps on two pairs of shoes. I informed them of my plans to move east so that may have been my last time at the Shoe Stop (highly recommended to anyone in Seattle). After the shoes were fixed I drove to the Frye Art Museum to see the R. Crumb exhibit. It was a pretty comprehensive show especially for those unfamiliar with his work (I don't know much about it him but I know more than the general public). Anyway. it was a decent show, I did come to the conclusion that we have totally different taste in women!

After the Frye I drove downtown and decided to check on some stores. After driving around in circles for 30 minutes I parked in a lot and went to Barneys New York and Butch Blum to see if they had anything on sale and to see what they had in new. Barneys didn't have anything left from fall and the spring collection wasn't as good. They had a little Dries van Noten, Raf Simons, Jil Sander and McQueen but no Margiela. I hate that the dollar is so weak. It makes all these European labels so much more expensive. Butch Blum actually had some Demeulemeester on sale and some new Demeulemeester but nothing in my size or price range (they did have the beautiful grey leather jacket from the fall but 60% off $3200 is still a huge amount of money).

I ended up not buying anything and got in my car to see if I could find the new Sculpture Garden that I was told was on the waterfront. I drove around a little and shortly came across the garden when I saw Alexander Calder's giant "Eagle" sculpture. I parked the car and spent the next hour or so walking the grounds, taking photos and looking at sculptures and Seattle. This was the first place I'd been to in Seattle where I actually liked the city again.

After I left the sculpture garden I went to Ladro cafe and had an iced coffee (the weather was great while I was in Seattle and sunny skies always make me want an iced coffee). I picked up my friend from work and we drove to the International District to get some cheap Vietnamese food (mmm tofu sandwich).

We then got back into the car and drove back to the waterfront area to attend the opening party for the Moooi Boutique @ Inform. Marcel Wanders wasn't at the opening as they had hoped he would be but they had a ton of Moooi products on the floor and I never get tired of seeing the Smoke Chair in person. Several of my friends were at the opening which was nice. I also saw some architects and designers that I knew from my time in Seattle (though I avoided talking to them). Around 8pm I drove my friend back to his apartment and then got back on I-5 for the trip back to Portland. The drive back was pretty uneventful except for the brief periods of rain, which always make the drive seem even longer.

Daily DIScription

It's Tuesday and I was really hoping to hear back from Theo today when I checked my email, but no luck. Another day of waiting.

Most of my day has been spent listing things on ebay. It's really amazing how long it takes to post things, especially when you're relying on a cafe wi-fi connection! Anyway, I posted about a dozen things, so hopefully I'll have some extra cash by the weekend.

Monday morning, Presidents Day, and no word from Theo about the job in Antwerp. I also won't be getting a letter in the mail from MIT today, so today is pretty useless.

I'm at the cafe near my apartment and the Zoobombers (I think that's all one word) are heading down Burnside. I'm a little confused because they normally do the ride on Sunday nights, so they're about 12 hours late.

Daily DIScription

It's Sunday and I'm at Ace Hotel again. I actually slept through most of the night last night which might mean I'm getting back to my normal sleep schedule. However, tonight I am going to a concert and then to Hive (aka goth night) at Plan B. Being unemployed and having a car worked out perfectly for this since they are both on the East side and I don't have to get up early in the morning. I'm looking forward to dancing but I'm not sure when I'll get there since the concert doesn't start until 9 and there are 4 bands playing (I wish shows would get back to just having a single opening act and then the headliners).

Yesterday, I spent all day over in SE and NE and managed not to buy anything other than coffee beans, coffee, brunch and dinner. I almost bought a black leather ipod/id holster. I am still thinking of getting it but I'm going to wait a bit on it. It would be perfect to bring on a trip abroad though.

Daily DIScription

Well, today rounds up my first week of unemployment. So far, so good.

Yesterday I got a lead to potential job in Antwerp designing optical frames for Theo! This is somewhat a dream job, in that it would allow me to move to Antwerp (something I've wanted to do for a very long time) and it would allow me to get out of the interiors/architecture field. I have exclusively bought Theo frames for the last 11 years, so I feel I understand the aesthetic. I've also already been to the head quarters and know a bit about the owners. I'm sure it's something that will take a while to get figured out but the fact that I got the email from someone close to the owner is a good sign.

However, this does pose a conflict since I am still waiting to hear back from MIT about my graduate application. I really do want to go back to school and further my education as well as learn a whole new set of skills, but a move abroad seems like an opportunity not to pass up. I have a million scenarios swimming around my head.

Last night I went to see the stop motion animated film, Blood Tea & Red String with a friend of mine (his Valentine date was too busy with a school project to come along). It's a film I've known about for awhile (MySpace is good for something I suppose) but this was the first screening of the film in Portland (to my knowledge). As it turns out the film maker now lives in Portland, which was good to hear.

After the film we went to the Savoy for dinner and drinks. I ordered the same drink I had last time I was there but it was completely different this time (not as good, but strong). My friend and I hadn't really seen each other in awhile so it was good to catch up on some things. He is going to work on a design (based on one of his paintings) for a tattoo I want to get on my forearm.

I'm back at the Ace (after having been at a different cafe the last two days) and getting ready to send off some resumés for jobs (to meet the unemployment office expectations).

No plans for tonight at this point in time.

Daily DIScription

Yesterday I spent 7 hours at Ace Hotel filling out student loan forms and generally browsing the internet. I also got a little reading done of the book I got for x-mas , This is Your Brain on Music, while I was downloading software. It's a pretty interesting book that my aunt gave me. It goes into the neuroscience of how we hear, process and understand music. I feel like I need to take an ear training class though and maybe a hearing test.

My sleep pattern is already really screwed up so I'm waking up at 4am and not falling asleep until 8am then not getting up until 12. I think my natural sleep pattern would be to sleep from 2am until 10 or 12, but right now I end up taking naps in the early evening and then waking up for a few hours before falling back asleep.

I had to go back to my office this afternoon to pick up a coffee mug I had left there and pick up a package that had arrived for me. I had lunch with my two usual lunch partners since I arrived around 12:30. The package was an x-mas present
from a friend in Vienna. It is a nice little leather box pendant necklace that doubles as a credit card/cash holder. It has a hook on it so you can just clip it to a belt loop. Should be perfect for going to clubs.

I think I'm going to see The Golden Compass this evening. It's playing at a second run theater by my apartment, and since my video store has closed I haven't really watched any films.

My first "jobless" Monday (in 2008) began like a typical "work" Monday. The alarm going off at 7:30 and then pushing snooze several times. I had to go into the office to get the last off my things and return the laptop accessories I had at home. Of course it wasn't until I got to the office that I realized I hadn't brought the accessories. I got my stuff and had coffee with a couple ex-coworkers which is what we would typically do in the mornings.

I went back to my apartment, got my computer and the office computer stuff and walked back to the office.

Now I'm at Ace Hotel, again.

Sundays are not quite the same when you don't have a job to go to on Monday. I'm looking forward to not having to be in an office all day but it's still new enough to feel strange. A feeling I'm all too familiar with.

After The Farm ended up being too crowded, my friend and I ended up going to Masu East for sushi last night. By mistake we ended up getting a double order of some fancy eel (unagi) roll and we also had tofu and a spicy shrimp roll as well as regular unagi. I was quite full when we are all through. I also ran into two friends at the restaurant (separately) which is pretty unusual for me.

After dinner my friend dropped me off at Doug Fir and I met two new people from the Neubauten website. We had a drink and then went to Rotture to see the show.

A few of my other friends were already at the show when I got there and the first band was already on stage. After the first band was finished I was introduced to Dimi Dero (another Neubauten supporter) the drummer of the headlining band. The second band, Magick Daggers, came on stage and they were good. Then after a short break the headlining band, Dimi Dero/Tex Napalm/Anthony S. Malat, came on. Very good stripped down 3-piece rock.

After the show I got a ride to Fez for a special Saturday edition of Shut Up & Dance. It was already 1:30 when I got there and most of the crowd had already gone home, but I danced to a few songs, said hi to some friends and then walked home.

I stayed in bed until pretty late in the morning and now I am up and back at the Ace Hotel.

My first day of freedom!

I pretty much was in bed from when I got home yesterday after being laid off so I got up unusually early for a Saturday (still not early in most peoples opinion).
After showering and shaving I got dressed and rode to the post office to mail my last bit of ebay stuff off to France. After the post office I went to the Ace Hotel and had coffee at Stumptown, where I met a friend who is stopping through on her way to Canada.

Tonight I'm going to see a show at Rotture: Dimi Dero, Tex Napalm and Anthony S. Malat. I'm meeting a fellow Neubauten supporter for drinks before the show and may go to dinner with my friend that's visiting prior to drinks.

I forgot my SD card at work so I couldn't take a photo this morning. So, it looks like I'll have to post images of today's outfit tomorrow.

Last night after taking a nap and "practicing" bass and guitar, I got a call from a friend and we decided to meet. We were on our way to a gallery show (to meet other friends) when we ran into them on their way out of the gallery. The four of us wanted to get a drink some where, but since Apotheke closed in October, we haven't had anyplace to go. We ended up going back to my apartment for bourbon and chocolate, since I had just bought a bottle of Jefferson's single barrel Kentucky bourbon.

We talked and listened to some music: Velvet Underground, Imaad Wasif, Murcof and Shout at the Devil by Mötley CrĂ¼e (of all things!). So, the night ended listening to Bastard and saying goodbye.

At approximately 4:15 today, I was informed that I had been laid off. That makes 3 of the 5 jobs I've had in Portland, I've been laid off from. One of the jobs I quit I would have been laid off from within a month or two if I had stuck around. I wasn't too surprised by the layoff, because it had been extremely slow for the last couple of months but I thought I had a little more time. So, farewell WPH. Hello future.

Needless to say I don't think I'll be going out tonight.

Wow, it's already Thursday.

Last night I had a nice dinner with my sister and we got caught up over pasta and a nice bottle of Italian wine. I think it was some sort of Barbaresco but I can't remember the name. It was made with Nebbiolo grapes though.

I'm still trying to narrow the eau de toilettes down to my favorite. I'm wearing Cedre Blanc again today. I think it will be a decision between Anvers 2, Escentric 01, and Silver Mountain Water.

Monday, Monday...

Today is the final day of the testing I've been doing with scents. Today's scent is Escentric Molecules' Escentric 01. It's similar to Molecule 01 but it has some added scents to it making it a little more obvious. I think I'm smelling amber and maybe lavender. It's nice and a little hard to place.

Daily DIScription

Today is Sunday and as always the day started out with listening to This American Life. Today was a rebroadcast of a show I've already heard but I listened to it anyway.

I made breakfast and tried to do some laundry but one machine was in use and the other machine was broken, so I have to do it later tonight.

Right now I'm at my office doing a little work and checking on my ebay auctions (selling some stuff) and it looks like it's going well so far, but it's always the last few minutes of the auctions where things can get crazy. I guess I'll find out the results tomorrow when I come into work.

Today I'm wearing Kilian's Cruel Intentions and based on the packaging I saw on line it's a women's fragrance but it's not too feminine. It has an odd and powdery scent to it that I can't place. It's probably not for me though even though the bottle and box are black.

It's been raining all day so I stayed in bed very late listening to the radio and falling in and out of sleep.

I finally got up and made toast and coffee and then got ready for my "day".

I decided to try out Ulrich Lang's Anvers eau de toilette today. It's been the most floral of all the scents I've tried but does have some leather and wood in it to make it fine for men or women. However, it's not been my favorite of the bunch so far.

02 February 2008

Details Requested

As requested, here are a couple better photos of the shoes I'm wearing today. And the pin!

I got these adidas a couple of years ago after seeing them in the adidas store and not buying them because they weren't "all black". Anyway, then I decided that I wanted them and they were gone so I had to track them down online. I like this style and it's a pretty "classic" trainer in a nice combination of materials. Named after the New Zealand All Blacks, a rugby team no one other than rugby fans have heard of. A few months after I got these I ended up buying another pair in blue, brown, neon yellow and safety orange. I wish I had another pair in black though.

CLOSE UP OF THE DEMEULEMEESTER PIN

This pin is part of a set of pins that I got in the fall. There were 5 pins in 3 different sizes, this one is 35mm across. I'm not sure who did the graphics for these pins (if you know, tell me) but they reminded me of Kara Walkers work and I knew I had to get them. I ended up ordering them from the Ann boutique in Antwerp.

Look at that! It's already February and it's the end of the week. Great!

Today, I'm trying out Creed's Silver Mountain Water scent which I have known about for maybe five years. I always liked the scent but never bought it for various reasons. Creed is an old and famous company who makes several perfumes and eau de toilettes, some have been custom made for royalty, but the Silver Mountain Water is the one that I think has the best smell. It's a very fresh scent with citrus and wood notes.

No plans for tonight after work. I may go see Persepolis with a friend or I may stay home and watch more episodes of Futurama. I don't think dancing is going to happen tonight.
