DIScourse

A lot has happened since I last wrote a journal entry and I'm not going to go recount everything that has happened because it's all in the past now.

I will say that on March 31 I found out that I was not accepted into MIT for the VAP masters program, which was a blow. Shortly afterwards I went to New York to visit friends and interview for jobs (within a week of sending out applications to East Coast firms I got three interviews at a variety of good firms).

While in New York I met with the owner of Theo (the Belgian eyewear company I've been wearing for 13+ years) just to introduce myself to him and his son. The introduction turned into something more and after four hours I was offered the opportunity to move to Antwerp for the summer and work as a designer at Theo. This will give me time to see if I like living in Antwerp (it's been a dream of mine for about ten years) and to see how well I mesh within the Theo family. If everything goes well it may turn into a permanent position, which would be ideal as it would help me get into the product design field while still allowing me to work on exhibition spaces and maybe even some retail design. I'm very excited about the possibilities that could arise from living and working in Antwerp.

I bought my ticket to Amsterdam (I'll take the train to Antwerp) on Thursday, so it's all starting to feel more concrete now. An apartment has also been found for me which a relief. I've been told it's in a great location and it will be newly renovated and furnished, so it sounds great. I can't wait to see pictures of the building and find out the actual address.

I have a lot to do in the next three weeks to prepare for the move but I'm sure it will be worth it once I find myself having a Belgian ale in a café in Antwerp.
